A species thought to have disappeared forever. In 1845, explorer Ludwig Leichhardt reported the most beautiful and colourful grasshopper he had ever seen. He spotted them in great numbers, but between this sighting and the early 1900s, only two more specimens were discovered, each many years apart. And then, just like that, the species disappeared without a trace for over 70 years. Leichhardt’s Grasshopper was rediscovered in 1971 but remains particularly rare and little studied, with only a few fragile populations within the Kakadu and Keep River National Parks. A rare Australian beauty.
