Due to its complex and diverse geography, South America is home to the largest number of bird species in the world. Of these, approximately 120 bird species can be found in the Andean and Altiplano regions.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), many of these birds are listed as endangered or near threatened due to increases in mining pollution, collection of their eggs and hunters who kill them for their meat, their feathers and to sell them to zoos.

The birds of the Andes play a vital role in the balance of this delicate ecosystem as well as in the mythology of Andean societies.

From left to right: Ecuadorian Hillstar (least concern), Grey-breasted Mountain Toucan (near threatened), Magellanic Woodpecker (least concern), Andean Flamingo (vulnerable), Andean Condor (near threatened), Andean Cock-of-the-rock (least concern)
