According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) at least 12% of the world’s bird species are threatened with extinction, and an additional 8% are near threatened. This means one of every five bird species could be extinct in the next 50-80 years. This equates to more than 2.000 species. The primary threats are deforestation, extreme weather events, introduced species and the use of pesticides.

Birds are excellent indicators species and provide valuable insights into how and why the environment is changing. Researchers can measure the changing status of biodiversity and the response to those threats – conservation, new laws or policies, and public knowledge.

Many plants depend on birds as well. Birds disperse their seeds and sometimes a seed has to be digested and deposited by a bird before it will germinate. They are also important to agricultural crops as they remove insect pests.

From left to right: Juan Fernández firecrown (critically endangered), Writhed-billed hornbill (critically endangered), Blue-headed quail-dove (endangered), Blue throated macaw (critically endangered), California condor (critically endangered), Yellow-eyed penguin (endangered)
